Who we are
The Asikhule Sonke Trust is structured, in addition to its public benefit objective, as a Broad-Based Black Ownership Scheme in terms of the B-BBEE Act and relevant codes of good practice. The trust is an educational trust in the skill development sector and supports the work of the Johannesburg Bible College (JBC), through bursaries awarded to its beneficiaries who are students at the college. JBC is a non-profit organization based in South Africa. It provides support to many students throughout their collegiate journey with holistic education-encompassing academics, life skills, self-development. To give them confidence that helps them balance their mental, physical and social wellbeing - thereby empowering them to reach their full potential as self-sustaining and proactive members of society, especially in local churches.
Asikhule Sonke Trust has been set up to receive funding from companies who wish to get points in the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment space, and the beneficiaries of the fund are designated JBC students. The Asikhule Sonke Trust is able to contribute points to a company score card according to the relationship via ownership, skills development and socio-economic development. The Trust meets all legal requirements for Trustees and Beneficiaries. The Trustees are at least 50% Black Persons and at least 25% of the Trustees are women, which makes us a Level 1 B-BBEE partner.
JBC provides accessible skills training to those who were previously excluded. In order to make this training available Asikhule Sonke Trust offers generous bursaries. The majority of students make use of this facility, enabled by donations, and are active in their communities and churches. In order to measure the impact of our programme, we monitor and support all our beneficiaries, enabling them the best chance of success. The support provided to the beneficiaries will include both a financial and non-financial element with the final support determined by the needs of each beneficiary.
More about JBC
JBC is an interdenominational college offering men and women practical training in understanding and teaching the Bible through classroom based courses. JBC’s campuses are placed close to previously excluded students in Auckland Park, Soweto and Alexander Township.
JBC is a registered Not-for-Profit Company (NPC), which is governed by a board of trustees with various areas of expertise. They are registered with the South African Revenue Service as Section 18A. The accounts are externally audited by Innes DM Buchanan and can be made available upon request.
JBC is a member of the professional body, the Association of Christian Religious Practitioners (ACRP). They have been partners with them since inception and are early adopters in the new qualifications and training they have initiated with the Quality Council of Trades and Occupations (QCTO). JBC is accredited as a skills development provider (SDP210125160759).
Although the majority of teachers, nurses, police and accountants are trained and professionally qualified, it is estimated that over 90% of pastors are not. The majority of South Africans identify as Christian and attend a church. However it is most likely they are attending one where the pastor has not been professionally trained. The reasons for this are lack of prior education, lack of finances, and lack of proximity of training opportunities. The Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Rights Commission (CRL) identified the need and the ACRP has sought to rectify this by providing a skills based professional qualification through the QCTO. Asikhlue Sonke Trust works in this new government endorsed context. The vision of JBC is to provide this training to pastors from any denomination to empower the people of our country.
